Week 11 reflection

You would think doctors of all people would be understanding towards mothers. It seems like such a stark contrast to their profession. This is also a good representation of personal biases; they can think it's acceptable to ordinary workers but not for doctors due to their profession. This is also a really good example of sexism in the field. Women have a very hard time getting recognized already, and motherhood lowers the opinion of her apparently. This may be a product of 1950's era sexism, as some doctors can tend to be older. However I think its part of todays work culture. We promote working as much as we can, and maternity leave takes away a lot of time from working. This can cause positive opinions of others in the workplace to drop, as evidenced by the interviewer in my post. However some of that must be combated by the knowledge they have of motherhood. Personal bias is very easily observed with motherhood, as some coworkers are likely more understanding than others, and women may be more friendly about it than men. Its definitly something to think about.
